The Rolling Out Interview
Let me tell you something. When Chelsea Alexandra of Rolling Out Magazine sat down with me, she didn’t ask about products first. She asked about food. About what we put in our bodies every single day without thinking twice. And that’s exactly where this conversation needs to start — not with what you can buy, but with what you already know how to do: eat.
The interview came right after our second annual Honduran Experience — an event we held in Atlanta on August 6, 2023, to share the medicinal benefits of plant-based products and honor the legacy of my father, Dr. Sebi. People came from all over the country. They didn’t come for a sale. They came because they wanted to learn how to feed themselves differently. And that energy carried right into this conversation with Rolling Out.
What we talked about was simple, really. I shared my grocery list — the vegetables, fruits, and grains that carry a high level of nutritional value. Not processed. Not packaged. Whole foods that feed you at the cellular level. Because here’s the thought about it — if your food isn’t feeding your cells, what exactly is it doing? But underneath every answer I gave Chelsea, there was a deeper story. The story of how my father’s teachings shaped everything I know about food, health, and the body’s ability to maintain itself.
Dr. Sebi’s Legacy and Impact
My father, Dr. Sebi — born Alfredo Darrington Bowman in the village of Ilanga, Honduras, in 1933 — spent his life studying the relationship between what we eat and how our bodies function. He wasn’t born into medicine. He was self-taught. He learned from the land, from the elders, from the plants themselves. And what he discovered over more than thirty years of research changed how millions of people think about food and wellness.
Dr. Sebi developed a methodology rooted in one principle: the body is electrical, and it needs minerals to conduct that electricity. When you flood the body with processed food, GMOs, and sugars, you create an acidic environment where the body can’t function the way it was designed. His answer wasn’t a pill. It was the plate. Whole, unprocessed, mineral-rich foods — what he called the Celebrities of the Garden — paired with his original Sea Moss formula, CMOS, which provides 92 of the 102 minerals the body needs.
In 1987, Dr. Sebi was taken to the New York Supreme Court. The attorney general charged him with practicing medicine without a license and making false claims. He was told to bring one witness for each condition he claimed to have addressed through nutrition. He brought over seventy. The court acquitted him on all counts. That case put Dr. Sebi’s name in front of the world — and it validated what he’d been saying all along: food matters. What you put in your body matters.
“If nature didn’t make it, don’t take it.”— Dr. Sebi (Alfredo Darrington Bowman)
After the trial, Dr. Sebi built the Usha Research Institute in La Ceiba, Honduras. People traveled from around the world — the United States, Latin America, Africa, Europe — to stay at Usha and learn his approach to plant-based nutrition. He didn’t advertise. Word spread because people felt different after following his guidance. They told their families. Their families told their neighbors. That’s how a movement grows — not through marketing, but through results people could feel in their own bodies.
Dr. Sebi passed away on August 6, 2016, in Honduras. But his impact didn’t stop. If anything, the interest in his work has grown stronger every year since. His teachings on alkaline nutrition, mineral supplementation, and the importance of eating whole foods have reached a new generation — people who are questioning what’s on their plates, reading labels for the first time, and choosing farmers markets over fast food. That’s his legacy in action.
The Usha Research Institute
Founded by Dr. Sebi in La Ceiba, Honduras. A destination where people from around the world came to learn his plant-based, mineral-rich approach to nutrition and wellness.
The 1987 Court Case
Acquitted on all charges in New York Supreme Court after presenting over 70 witnesses. The case brought Dr. Sebi’s methodology to national attention.
CMOS — The Sea Moss Formula
Dr. Sebi’s original Sea Moss blend, developed over decades of research. Provides 92 of the 102 minerals the human body needs for whole-body mineral balance.
A Global Movement
From Honduras to Harlem to Atlanta — Dr. Sebi’s teachings on alkaline living have reached millions worldwide. His family continues his mission through education and community.
People ask me all the time, “What would your father say if he could see all of this?” I think he’d say what he always said: “Go eat.” Not go buy something. Not go follow somebody. Go eat. Go learn what food does to your body. That was his message from day one, and it’s still mine.
As his daughter, I watched this work up close. I watched people who came to my father feeling broken walk away with hope — and a grocery list. That’s what stays with me. Not the fame. Not the court case. The look on someone’s face when they realize that food — real food, from the earth — can be the foundation of how they feel every single day. That’s what inspired me to build Sebi’s Daughters. That’s what drives everything we do.
Why Green Foods Matter
When we think about where we came from — the garden, the soil, the things our ancestors grew with their own hands — greens were always at the center of the plate. Not on the side. At the center. Somewhere along the way, we let processed food push the greens to the edge and then off the plate entirely. My father saw this happening decades before the rest of the world caught on. He said it plainly: we’re eating ourselves into sickness, and the way out is the same way we got in — through the plate.
What’s important about detoxing is that when you look at a list of nutritious items, it’s full of vegetables and fruits. The reason we have to detox in the first place is because we’ve overloaded ourselves with food that our bodies can’t use. Macaroni and cheese. Fried chicken. Processed sugars. We say it’s love, but we die of this very food. Was that love in the end?
Green foods — the real ones, not the ones in a bag with a label you can’t pronounce — carry chlorophyll, iron, alkaline minerals, and the kind of fiber that your gut was designed to work with. They don’t just nourish the body. They help the body do what it already knows how to do: maintain itself, rebuild itself, and function the way God intended. Dr. Sebi understood this at a molecular level. He studied the mineral content of plants, matched them to what the body requires, and built a nutritional guide that families still follow today.
“I’m not interested in you buying the products — I’m interested in you educating yourself about what you eat.”— Kellie Bowman, Rolling Out Magazine
Kellie’s Grocery List — The Celebrities of the Garden
My father called them the Celebrities of the Garden — the whole foods that serve as powerhouses to overall health and wellness. These aren’t exotic ingredients you need a specialty store for. Most of them are sitting in your farmers market right now. Your farmers markets — they are formidable alternatives. Dr. Sebi hand-selected these foods based on their mineral content, their alkaline properties, and their ability to nourish the body at the cellular level. This list isn’t a trend. It’s his life’s work, and it’s what I grew up eating.
Here’s my list. The foods I come back to every single week:
Okra
I love okra and everything green. Rich in fiber, vitamin C, and folate. Supports digestive health and helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels.
Kale & Leafy Greens
Watercress, dandelion greens, amaranth greens. Packed with chlorophyll, iron, and alkaline minerals. The foundation of any alkaline plate.
Avocado
Yes, it’s green. Healthy fats that support brain function, skin health, and mineral absorption. One of the most versatile foods in any kitchen.
Green Bell Peppers
High in vitamin C, antioxidants, and hydration. Things you can prepare on a daily basis without overthinking it.
Burro Bananas
Not the hybrid Cavendish banana. The original Burro banana — smaller, slightly tangy, and far richer in potassium and iron.
Cucumber & Zucchini
Hydrating, alkaline, and easy to work into any meal. Smoothies, salads, or just sliced with a squeeze of key lime.
The point isn’t that you need all of these tomorrow. The point is that you have a list. A list of whole foods that feed you at the cellular level. That’s what reimagining your plate and your kitchen looks like — not a complete overhaul, but a conscious shift toward what actually serves your body. My father gave us this list. I’m passing it to you.
There’s no judgment here. Are there days where we cheat? Are there days where we have an off day? If you can find me one person who was born 100% perfect, I would question that. The key to life is moderation. Start with one green meal a day. That’s it.
The Alkaline Connection
Every food on that list shares something in common: they support an alkaline internal environment. My father broke this down as simply as anyone ever has — you have two things: acid and alkaline. When your body sits in an acidic state, it’s working below standard for healing. An alkaline environment, above 7.0, is where the body can nourish and maintain itself. This wasn’t something he read in a textbook. He tested it. He lived it. He built an entire institute around it.
That’s not a fad. It isn’t a trend. It’s the science my father spent over thirty years refining at his Usha Research Institute in Honduras. And it starts with one choice: Stop using GMOs and Sugars.
When you fill your plate with the Celebrities of the Garden, you’re not just eating well. You’re shifting your body’s internal chemistry toward the environment where it functions best. Add a mineral-rich Sea Moss blend — what my father developed as CMOS, providing 92 of the 102 minerals the body needs — and you’re building the nutritional foundation that everything else sits on top of. Dr. Sebi is the architect of the CMOS movement, and his formula remains the standard that everything else is measured against.

The Honduran Experience
The Rolling Out interview came right on the heels of our second annual Honduran Experience, held in Atlanta on August 6, 2023. This wasn’t a product launch. It was a gathering — a space for community to come together and learn the medicinal benefits of plant-based living directly from our family. We chose August 6 intentionally. It’s the anniversary of my father’s passing — and instead of mourning, we celebrate by doing exactly what he would have wanted: teaching people how to eat.
People came because they wanted to understand what my father taught. They wanted to taste the food, ask the questions, and sit with other people who were on the same journey. When I was younger, I watched people who were suffering from different conditions feel better — and it brought smiles and even tears to their faces. That’s what drives this work. That’s what the Honduran Experience is about.
We named it after Honduras because that’s where my father built the Usha Research Institute — where people traveled from around the world to learn from him. Bringing that spirit to Atlanta, to our community here, is one of the ways we keep his mission alive. Every year, the event grows. More families show up. More young people ask questions. My father’s legacy isn’t something we preserve behind glass. It’s something we live, out loud, with food on the table and community in the room.
“I’m not looking to feed you for today. I’m looking for you to eat to live.”— Kellie Bowman, Rolling Out Magazine
How to Start Today
Nobody’s asking you to throw everything out tomorrow. We got to do better — but doing better starts with one choice at a time. My father didn’t build his knowledge overnight. He studied for decades. So give yourself grace, but give yourself a start. Here’s where Kellie recommends you begin:
Visit Your Local Farmers Market
Your farmers markets are formidable alternatives to the grocery store. The produce is fresher, often grown without GMOs, and you’re supporting your community at the same time.
Read Every Label
If you can’t pronounce what’s in it, your body can’t use it. Start paying attention to ingredients before you pay attention to calories. The ingredient list tells you everything.
Add One Green Meal a Day
Replace one meal with something from the Celebrities of the Garden list. A green smoothie. A big salad with avocado and cucumber. A bowl of sauteed okra with quinoa. One meal. That’s all.
Build Your Mineral Foundation
Add a Sea Moss blend to your morning routine. Let the 92 minerals do what they do — support your thyroid, your joints, your gut, your energy. Let the body do what it already knows how to do.
Educate Before You Buy
Learn how to eat first. The products come second. Kellie says it plainly: “If you don’t buy any of our products, you still need to know how to eat.” That’s the lesson Dr. Sebi taught his family — education first, always.
For a printable weekly framework with recipes, our 7-Day Alkaline Meal Prep guide is the simplest place to start. And our Dr. Sebi Grocery List gives you the complete shopping list.
